17 Alpha Hydroxyprogesterone, also known as 17P, is a special therapy that is believed to have the potential to prevent thousands of expectant mothers from delivering their babies prematurely. Sadly, the preterm birth rate has climbed an estimated 20% in America since 1990. However, some studies that have been conducted on 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone found that participants who received weekly injections of the medication had a significant reduction in the rate of recurring preterm delivery, and it also lowered the probability of their infants suffering from several complications.

17 Alpha Hydroxyprogesterone is a progestogen that is very similar to the hormone progesterone and has been designed for women who suffer recurrent miscarriages and/or various menstrual disorders. It has been found to be safe and effective for women who are at a higher risk for delivering their babies too early by keeping their progesterone levels up. Progesterone is very important during pregnancy, and though it is not entirely understood how this hormone prevents preterm birth, it has shown to keep the uterus from contracting.

Females who are candidates for this type of treatment are those carrying one child (singleton pregnancy) and who have experienced previous unplanned preterm delivery (37 weeks gestation) of a single baby. A woman who is interested in taking 17 Alpha Hydroxyprogesterone should talk to her health care provider to find out more information and to see if this prescription medication is ideal for her situation. In addition, 17P is only available through compound pharmacies.

For at least two years after the premature birth of your child, there is special care that you should take for your child to keep them constantly out of danger and away from all kinds of ailments and illnesses. You must develop a right set of parenting guidelines to help your child best.As far as the growth and development of your prematurely born baby goes; the usual advice given to parents is that they feed them a lot of vitamins and iron to help them develop as strong babies and stay as healthy as they can.

Especially iron is an important nutrient that premature babies often lack and so make sure that for at least a year your baby has iron drops regularly to keep him or her strong. However, do not worry that your child is too small and may not develop properly. For the first two year they are usually weaker and smaller than most other children but with proper care they catch up with the other kids soon and begin to develop normally.

You should however maintain a proper chart for measuring the development and growth of your child and keep consulting the doctor in set intervals to chart your child’s progress.

The feeding schedule of your premature baby is also very rapid. For the first few months your child will need at least eight to ten feeds a day and there should not be a gap of more than three to four hours between each feed as otherwise your child’s body could get dehydrated. Your child should consistently be gaining weight; if you see that they have stopped doing so then contact your doctor immediately. You can switch to giving your baby solid food after about six months of their due date; not the date that they were actually born.

A study on the multivitamins, taken during pregnancy, has revealed that most of these are deficient in Iodine as they mentioned on their labels. And this lower ratio of Iodine can affect the process of brain development. Unfortunately, a large number of brands those mentioned Iodine as a constituent on the labels of prenatal vitamins, are found with the lack of declared amount.

Dearth of Iodine can expose the babies, in the womb, to the major risks of hearing and speech troubles and in severe cases; it may cause mental retardation and can effect the normal growth. The recommended amount of Iodine intake with other vitamins is 150 micrograms per day, for the proper functioning of thyroid hormones- essential for the brain development in fetus.

The research also viewed the nature of Iodine ingredients, whether it is from natural sources as kelp or from salt like Potassium Iodide. It is also noticeable as the lower amount put the unborn on risk, the higher percentage can also cause greater damages, especially in the women who already face thyroid problems.

The food supplements which have the Iodine in the form of kelp contain more than enough Iodine while those with Potassium Iodide have an average level of iodine.

So it is suggested, on the base of this study, women should take Potassium Iodide containing prenatal multivitamins rather than those with kelp.

The researchers, however, urged the responsible authorities to notice this problem because there is no law that requires a vitamin manufacturer to include iodine in prenatal vitamins.
